How to Clean Shower Curtain Liner without Washing Machine

Shower curtains serve a protective role in your bathroom by trapping moisture and water in and preventing any leaks. When it comes to a shower curtain, it’s important to keep it clean, or else there can be a buildup of mold, mildew, and soap.

There are multiple types of curtains out there, which are made of plastic, fabric, and others. Knowing how to wash each one of them is vital. In this article, we will explain to you how to clean shower curtain liner without washing machine.

Prepping the Shower Curtain

Prepping your shower curtain should always be the first step before you clean it. Take the rod down and slip the curtain off of the rod by removing the rings. It isn’t necessary to remove it, but doing so will make it much easier to wash.

Along with the curtain, you can also take the rings off of the rod and wash them too. Then again, most of the time rings won’t pick up the same bacteria because they aren’t made of fabric.

There are different methods that you can practice when it comes to cleaning shower curtain liners. Here are some techniques that do not require the use of a washing machine:

Hand Washing

Hand washing a shower curtain is going to be the most difficult method to clean it because it requires you to put in some physical labor. However, you also have to keep in mind that not all shower curtains are designed to be put into the washing machine.

By using your hands, you can keep your curtain protected and have it last longer by not being exposed to harsh cleansers or hot water.

Here are the materials you need:

  • Microfiber cloth
  • Baking soda
  • Warm water
  • A tub or sink

Here are the steps to follow:

Fill your tub or sink with warm water and place a few tablespoons of baking soda into the mixture.

Dip the microfiber cloth into the water and then ring it out until it’s only slightly dampened.

Take the curtain and lay it on a flat surface, a kitchen table works best. Scrub the entire surface down with the cloth, dipping it into the water as needed.

Rinse the cloth with warm water until the baking soda dissipates. Then, wipe down the curtain again, except this time aim to remove any baking soda left.

Repeat step 4 until the curtain is completely cleaned.

Yet again, dip it back into the baking soda mixture and then clean any leftover spots that may have a stain or don’t seem like they are clean enough.

Rinse the curtain again with a cloth dipped in warm water and rub it down. You can also choose to rinse it down with the shower head once you place it back up.

Finally, let the curtain dry, and then you’re done!

Spot Cleaning

Spot cleaning your shower curtain is the easiest method of keeping it clean. However, this method isn’t that effective at getting rid of bacteria, mold, or mildew. You should repeat this process every few weeks to help maintain your curtain, but not to thoroughly wash it. Instead, focus on cleaning it every other week.

Here are the materials needed:

  • Bleach
  • A towel
  • Warm water
  • Bowl

Here are the steps:

Take one part bleach and mix it with four parts water, as this will give you a potent consistency that isn’t too strong for plastic or fabric shower curtains.

Next, focus on dabbing the towel into the mixture and then applying it to any stains.

Let the mixture sit on the curtain for a minute or two and then rinse it with warm water.

Repeat the process until you’ve completely removed the stain.

Spray Cleaning

The last method is spray cleaning your shower curtain, which allows you to clean it without actually having to take the curtain off of the rods. This method is suitable for those of you who live in apartment buildings or don’t have access to a washer or dryer.

However, you have to know that this method works only to prevent the buildup of mold and bacteria. If you need to deep clean your curtain, always use a washing machine.

Here are the materials you will need:

  • Vinegar
  • Warm water
  • A towel
  • Spray bottle

Here are the steps you need to take:

Mix one part vinegar to one part water and play it into the spray bottle, ensuring that the mixture is well incorporated.

Spray down the inside of your curtain with the solution and allow it to sit for up to 15 minutes.

Come back and scrub down the inside of the shower curtain.

Rinse with warm water.

Repeat as many times as needed.

Cleaning your shower curtains is a pretty straightforward process. As long as you have the right type of cleaning solutions, you can essentially clean them whether or not you have a washing machine.

Then again, these cleaning methods aren’t as effective as using a washing machine. Some curtains are made to be washed by hand while others can be put into the washer.

To achieve the best results, we suggest checking with the manufacturer before attempting any of these methods.
