Do You Have to Use a Shower Curtain Liner?

Do you need to use a liner along with your shower curtain? Absolutely, you do.

With so many types of showering available today, it would be easy to assume that you don’t have to use a curtain liner. However, today’s curtain liners provide an excellent barrier between the water and your skin, but they’re also not perfect. They can be an eyesore to say the least, and using one instead of the more effective alternatives like shower curtains and “moderately” priced towel racks is a common mistake among homeowners.

A curtain liner is a slightly more efficient (for most applications) alternative to a standard curtain rod. However, that’s about all the difference it makes. Using a curtain liner instead of curtain rods makes the installation process much more difficult because you’ll need to assemble the rod with a certain amount of precision, and you’ll also need to install the curtain itself separately and with some effort.

Curtain rods are typically made from stainless steel or aluminum. They have “flanges” on the ends of them, which fit snugly into the curtain opening, and then the curtain rod itself uses bolts to hold the flanges in place.

When installed properly, curtain rods can last as long as 25 years or more. However, over time, these flanges will wear down and cause water leaks in your home. Because these leaks are always present, they cause your shower curtain to simply not work properly or look good.

It’s true that some newer curtain liners are more leak resistant than standard curtain rods, but even these newer types of curtain liners have some flaws. Many of the new curtain liners aren’t even made with non-plastic materials (like wood and fiberglass), so if you already have a liner for your shower curtain and it was made with a plastic material, then you’re going to have to replace it with another brand.

As mentioned, you do have to use a curtain liner if you want your shower curtain to be leak resistant. But there are still other options. For example, instead of using a curtain rod, you could use a liner that has holes punched in it for the rod to fit through.

These types of curtains are water resistant as well, but their water resistance is more severe than shower curtains. This means that if your curtains are made with plastic materials, your curtain rod won’t fit through these types of curtains. Also, because they’re thinner than standard curtain rods, the coverings won’t make enough of a barrier against water leaks to keep out germs and bacteria.

Curtains made with metal and other materials also aren’t as leak proof as shower curtains made with plastic materials. They may provide a few extra inches of water resistance, but these same curtains will let a lot of water into your shower and could leave your room smelling gross.

When it comes to choosing which type of curtain to use, it’s a matter of preference. For instance, if you don’t mind spending a little more for a curtain that doesn’t require any additional components to be installed, you can get a curtain that has holes punched in it so that the rod can fit through.

For some people, a curtain with holes for the rod to go through isn’t a problem. If this is you, then you should consider getting a single rod curtain instead of a curtain with holes in it.

You can choose whether or not you want a curtain liner to go with therod that’s already installed. If you just want to get the shower curtain set up for now, then a curtain liner isn’t a bad option.
